Sydney Cafes

Stepping through Darling Street Balmain's heritage-listed Working Men's Institute, we entered a European oasis. Tastefully decorated and exuding old-world charm, subdued lighting from the wrought-iron chandeliers and candles at La Boheme's tables set a scene as equally suited to romantic dining (visit mid-week) as dining with a group of friends or family.

SMH

This is the source of the pork, run by two young Czech-born couples who've grafted a Hapsburg hunting lodge sensibility onto the late-19th-century space.

Restaurant & Catering NSW

The name La Boheme has several meanings including life in Bohemia (the main part of the Czech Republic).

Menulog

Dined at La Boheme for the first time during Mother's Day, during which time they served a set menu. The food was wholesome, delicious and well-presented. The staff were attentive, without being pushy. The building itself is very atmospheric and feels very much like a European beer hall.

Eatability

Went down to a buzzing restaurant on darling street balmain. Nestled away inebtween a few shops, this striking restaurant was amazing. I ordered the jager schnitzel, it was amazing! Big, golden, crispy and filling. The mushroom sauce was delish! The service was fast and friendly. My friends got the pork schnitzel and the steak oscar, which were both equally tasty. A friend received a caramel milkshake, and it was in abundance with full flavour caramel, it was beautiful. When your in the area, please visit this little eatery where the food is well priced and delicious!

Total Travel

The staff aim to create a relaxed environment for guests where they can spend time discovering other cultures by sampling from the wide variety of dishes, beers and wines.

True Local

Another little hidden gem which you would never pick from the street. The entrance is through a little arcade from the street and voila there is what looks to be an old church that has been converted into a split level restaurant.

Grab Your Fork

I'm dining with a happy crowd of feasters at La Boheme, a Czech restaurant and beer cafe all but hidden on Balmain's Darling Street. Its modest entrance--a small sign pointing you up a few steps and into a narrow arcade--gives no indication of the impressiveness of the building that awaits, the former Balmain Working Mens Institute that is now Heritage-listed.

OZ Eating NSW

La Boheme brings the best of Central Europe's traditional "home-style" foods such as Crispy Pork Knuckle from Germany, Golden Roasted Duck with sauerkraut and potato dumplings from the Czech Republic and Belgium Beer Mussels.

Alternative Media Group

Bohemia, the crossroads of Central Europe, was a haven for poets, artists and writers, so you’ll understand if there’s a bit of artistic license with the dishes they present.

Your Restaurants

Cold Bohemian winter nights call for solid hearty food, however even in comparatively steamy Sydney there's always room for sauerkraut. La Boheme offers a central European feast of rustic fare, from Belgian-style mussels to Hungarian goulash. The list of mains features meats roasted so perfectly golden that you can't possibly refuse them, even though you know that crunchy skin will play havoc with your thighs.

The chefs have extensive experience with European cooking having worked in Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic and Australia. This breath of experience allows them to bring the best of Mid European cooking to Balmain. The dishes are made in traditional style using recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. To create the perfect dish the chefs source the finest imported ingredients and combined them with the freshest local produce.
